California Carts is an artist-driven platform and studio aimed at generating an open-source system of tools, techniques and resources. Collaborations expand an ever-growing catalog of studio furniture and accessories, available as purchased goods, kits or downloadable plans. Workshops and tutorials aim to help makers learn skills, design their own tools and work more efficiently.
Nick Rodrigues and Charles (Chachi) Mathis have a great deal of experience helping artists, businesses and institutions realize projects, designing studios and workspaces, developing strategies for fabrication and teaching skills and processes. In all they do, sharing knowledge is always the priority. Nick and Chachi met while studying sculpture at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. After graduating, Nick helped develop the 3D Design Studio at Artists for Humanity, while Chachi managed shop spaces and taught studio skills for the Program in Art Culture and Technology at MIT.
Nick Rodrigues makes immersive sculptural environments. He developed the first California Cart while studying at CALARTS in Valencia, California.

California Carts believes in small-scale manufacturing and environmental responsibility. The majority of custom work and prototypes are fabricated in-house at our Glassell Park studio, while stock designs and large contracts are produced by a trusted family-run business also based in Los Angeles. All of our hardware, raw materials and components are sourced from USA-based manufacturers, and we believe in developing products that will stand the test of time. We maintain extremely high standards of quality, and only use repairable materials that can provide long-term functionality. We do not believe in programmed obsolescence.
Our studio functions as a full-service fabrication shop, working showroom and event space. If you would like to visit or are interested in renting shop time for projects, please email to set up an appointment!
